What condition is your condition in?

For many years I have been interacting with people that I consider to be the best health care professionals around. As a result I have made some profound discoveries and observations. The most important considerations in my way of thinking, were easy ways for the average person to monitor and look into the general sate of their physical condition, simply and inexpensively. -Vince

How can we as responsible adults be proactive regarding the monitoring of our health personally? Answer: Simple tests can reveal much:

(1) pH level

(2) Body Temperature

(3) Well being

Monitoring pH reveals quickly whether or not our bodies are prone to illness. It has been stated by numerous reliable sources that most-disease conditions are revealed in our pH. Therefore it would make sense that testing ones pH should be among everyone's first line of defense and monitoring of general fitness.

In the early 1900's a simple test was devised to monitor for proper thyroid function. That test is to simply take your temperature within the first few minutes of waking. More about this later.

Well being actually covers abroad spectrum that includes physical, emotional and spiritual aspects.

With the many scientific advances of our age, it would seem that most of us should be healthy and experience well being. However; oddly, many people suffer from chronic fatigue, are stressed out , depressed, have diminished stamina, diminished immune function, loss of libido, and such a large array of problematic symptoms and on large a scale that, when you look at the statistics for all diseases and conditions, most members of modern society are experiencing chronic lack of well being as a norm.

People often tolerate this state of being by sheer will power. Many who act to address the issues, often fall short in their attempts to correct this ill state of being, even when the best intentions and methods are employed. In view of these trends, here are some important things to consider.

According to recent studies by the University of Colorado, there are an estimated 13 million Americans who may have undiagnosed thyroid problems. Research shows that low thyroid levels can raise cholesterol levels, thus raising the threat of a heart attack.

It is estimated that hypothyroidism now exists in as much as 70% of the American population.

Why is proper thyroid function so important?

Let's start by listing symptoms that can result from Hypothyroidism (too little thyroid function).

Fatigue

Weakness

Weight gain or increased difficulty losing weight

Constipation

Depression

Irritability

Memory loss

Difficulty concentrating

Coarse, dry hair

Hair loss

Cold intolerance (unable to tolerate the cold as well as those around you)

Dry, rough pale skin

Muscle cramps and frequent muscle aches

Abnormal menstrual cycles

Joint pain and swelling

Diffuse muscle aches and tender spots

Decreased libido

Arthritis can develop in the hands and knees that resembles rheumatoid arthritis

One of the first things that comes to my mind, is that, these symptoms are the primary targets of most TV commercials that hawk a never ending array of pharmaceutical and personal health care products.

In fact, products that are designed to address the symptoms mentioned above, probably account for the bulk of all advertising. Is this a coincidence?

What has happened to drug development today? It seems clear that the primary driving force for the pharmaceutical companies is making money. We know that by developing ongoing sales that treat symptoms sales are then ongoing, therefore profits are ongoing. As a result of a money first shareholder-value-focus and mentality, the development of cures takes a back seat to treating symptoms and making money.

Conditions that are not in truth definitively identifiable, such as fibromialgia (a catch all diagnosis when the true condition may not be known) is a good example of something that requires treatment of symptoms. Also consider other chronic degenerative conditions such as: chronic fatigue syndrome, crones, graves disease, arthritis, depression, and a whole host of other conditions. What do they have in common? Should a cure be found for them, a whole industry cash cow could be slaughtered!

Along with problematic trends in drug development, recent studies indicate that many of these conditions may in fact be improperly diagnosed at the outset. Some researchers suggest that thyroid problems, lymes disease and hepatitis, should be among the primary causes that SHOULD be considered by the attending Physician or professional health care provider, but may not be.

More on this later.

Some valued experts contend that people who have hypothyroidism seem to present no symptoms at all, or symptoms when observable are so subtle that they may go unrecognized. Note: If you have these symptoms, you need to discuss them with your doctor, perhaps you should consider seeking the skills of an endocrinologist. If you have been diagnosed and are being treated for hypothyroidism, yet you continue to have any or all of these symptoms, you should seek answers as to why this is so, from your physician.

The primary function of thyroid hormone is to "control the body's metabolism"

What does this simple statement really mean?

For the moment, keep this question in mind. We will come back to this again shorty, but first let's review a brief account of the importance of pH before we proceed.

What Is "pH"?

By Växa

The body is largely made up of water, a medium which is biologically useful in allowing nutrients, oxygen and biochemicals to be transported from place to place. This water-based medium can have either acid or alkaline properties which are measured by a graduated scale called pH (meaning "potential hydrogen"), wherein 1.0 to 6.9 is considered acidic, 7.0 is neutral, and 7.1 to 14.0 is alkaline. The lower the pH number, the greater the acidity, and the higher the pH number, the greater the alkalinity.

Why Should I Be Concerned About My pH Levels?

pH level has profound effects on all body chemistry, health and disease. An imbalanced pH describes the pH level of the body when it becomes too acidic or too alkaline for long periods of time. Extended pH imbalances of any kind are not well tolerated by the body. Indeed, the management of "pH" is so important that the body has developed strict accounting procedures to monitor acid-alkaline balances in every cell. Fundamentally, all regulatory mechanisms (including breathing, circulation, digestion, hormonal production, etc.) serve the purpose of balancing pH, by removing caustic metabolized acid residues from body tissues without damaging living cells. If the pH deviates too far to the acid side or too far to the alkaline side, cells become poisoned by their own toxic waste and die.

Is An Imbalanced Body pH Really That Dangerous?

Yes, indeed it is! Nothing does well in an overly acidic or alkaline pH medium, least of all the human body! Just as acid rain can destroy a forest and alkaline wastes can pollute a lake, an imbalanced pH continuously corrodes all body tissue, slowly eating into the 60,000 miles of our veins and arteries like corrosives eating into marble. If left unchecked, an imbalanced pH will interrupt all cellular activities and functions, from the beating of your heart to the neural firing of your brain... An imbalanced pH interferes with all life itself!

Can An Imbalanced pH Cause Serious Problems?

Yes, especially as a person grows older! Although it may generally go unnoticed and undetected for years, an imbalanced pH (either consistently too acid or alkaline) leads to the progression of most, if not all, degenerative diseases including Cardiovascular Disease (the #1 killer in the U.S.), Cancer (the #2 Killer in the U.S.), and Diabetes, as well as the never ending frustration of excessive systemic weight gain. The U.S. National Center for Health Statistics estimates that if Cardiovascular Disease alone could be eliminated, it would add an average of 9.78 years to our life span! That's almost 10 years of additional life per person!

What Causes pH to Become Imbalanced?

Most diets cause an unhealthy Acid pH. In fact, diet appears to be the major influence in maintaining appropriate pH levels throughout the body. Research demonstrates that when food is metabolized and broken down, it leaves certain chemical and metallic residues, a noncombustible "ash" which, when combined with our body fluids, yields either acid or alkali potentials of pH. Certain foods are "acid-forming" in nature, whereas others are known to be "alkali-forming."

To date, there have not been adequate studies that take into account combinations of things such as genetically modified proteins etc. in particular, what the effects of such things are when combined with excitotoxins such as MSG, aspartame, Splenda (R) mono and hydrogenated-fats-and acids, and other more recently introduced ingredients to the food supply, and the overall-combined-effects on human physiology.

Which Foods Are "Acid-Forming" And Which Ones Are "Alkaline-Forming"?

Most high protein foods (such as meat, fish, poultry and eggs), nearly all carbohydrates

(including grains, breads and pastas) and fats are "acid-forming." And most fruits and vegetables are "alkaline-forming." Although citrus fruits, such as oranges and grapefruit, contain organic acids and may have an acid taste, they are not acid-forming when metabolized, leaving no acidic residue. Similarly, Free Form Amino Acids are not acid-forming, but instead offer unique buffering capabilities to the body to help offset acidic wastes.

How Can I Find Out My Body pH?

By testing your pH with Växa's Medical pH-Test Strips, you can determine quickly and easily, in the privacy of your own home, what your pH is. Växa Medical pH-Test Strips determine your urinary pH, which is generally a good indicator of how acid or alkaline your total body pH is. When urinary pH is continuously between 6.5 in the A.M. and 7.5 by evening, you're functioning in a healthy range; When continuously above this range you're too alkaline, and when continuously below it, you're too acid.

How Do I Rebalance My pH?

Watching your diet can help. If you're too acid, increase the number of fruits and vegetables you eat. If you're too alkaline, increase the amounts of acid-forming foods consumed. But an easier way is to take Växa's Buffer-pH+ daily to help balance your system while continuing to enjoy the foods you prefer!

How Does Växa's Buffer-pH+ Work?

Växa's Buffer-pH+ is an advanced cardiovascular and systemic (body-wide) homeopathic medicinal which works to safely and effectively balance an overly acid or overly alkaline system by buffering overly acid and alkaline residues and removing them from your body, as well as helping to dissolve toxic laden plaque. This allows tissues to be cleansed, and then healed naturally and more quickly, by the body. - End What Is "pH"? promotional literature by Växa

The primary function of thyroid hormone is to "control the body's metabolism"

The thyroid gland is the largest gland in the neck. It is located in the front of the neck below the Adam's apple, within muscle layers and skin. The thyroid gland has a butterfly shape, the two wings wrap around the trachea as the left and right thyroid lobes, topped by prethyroid cells.

Although not a part of the thyroid, the parathyroid glands are small endocrine system glands located behind the thyroid. Since they are close neighbors it is important to give a quick explanation There are four parathyroid glands that are about the shape and size of a grain of rice, Parathyroid Glands Control all Calcium Levels in our Bodies.

Our bodies use many elements to perform a multitude of life functions. Calcium is at the top of the hierarchy of importance, and is essential to life. The three primarily functions of Calcium are:

1. Most importantly; calcium provides the means for electrical impulses to travel along nerves. Calcium is what the body uses to conduct electricity. Parathyroid disease (too much thyroid) is often identified by neurological problems, identified by such things as weakness, fatigue, depression, etc. The body places the most importance on this use of calcium, and will divert calcium from other uses to keep this important process functioning, even to the detriment of other systems of the body.

2. Calcium inside muscle cells produces the energy to contract. Strength is the ability of the muscle system to use calcium in muscle cells to contract. Weakness as well as strength is directly related to calcium levels.

3. Calcium is the material that the frame of our bodies (our bones) is made of. Bones also act as a calcium reserve storage system. The parathyroid constantly controls the calcium level in blood by drawing it from the bones, which is then made available to the whole body.

The value of calcium to the body is so profound that; the parathyroid gland in essence, is a regulating system exclusively for calcium. The body does not have other glands that regulate any other mineral / element.

Improper function of the parathyroid can manifest as depression, anxiety, mania, personality disorders and all other neurological conditions may be directly related. Additionally kidney stones and osteoporosis can be directly related to improper parathyroid function

Although the sole function of the thyroid is to produce thyroid hormone, the importance of this point cannot be overstated!

Thyroid hormone has a profound effect on virtually every cell, fluid, process and tissues of the body. It regulates, controls and runs metabolism. What does that mean?

Definitions of METABOLISM on the Web:

* Metabolism (from metavallo), the Greek word for "change"), in the most general sense, is the ingestion and breakdown of complex compounds, coupled with the liberation of energy, and the consequent generation of waste products. It is a major process of living organisms, and because this process can happen at many levels within an organism, we can identify several kinds of metabolism: *When concerning an organism

The following is Promotion literature regarding Vitamineral Green, by Jameth Sheridan, N.D.

In a broad sense, metabolism is the process of life, while pH determines and reveals the overall state and condition of living processes.

At this point we should cover some important information regarding nutrition:

Nutrients never occur as isolates in natural foods. Nutrients are integrally related with many other natural molecules that are required for their absorption, assimilation and non-toxicity. The traditional vitamins and minerals that are offered are only a part of the whole vitamin or mineral complex. Isolated and synthetic nutrients are foreign to the body, completely unnatural, are poorly absorbed, offer incomplete results, imbalance body chemistry, deplete the body of co-factor nutrients, and usually have significant toxicities.

How do you know if a supplement contains isolates and/or synthetics? If the nutrients themselves are listed as actual ingredients (i.e., Thiamin, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Chromium Picolinate, Calcium, Magnesium, etc.), rather than constituents of the ingredients, they are isolated and/or synthetic. Synthetic and isolated vitamins and minerals are used almost exclusively for traditional vitamin and/or mineral products! There are problems when using this type of material. Please read on.

Although some isolated/synthetic nutrients can and do have benefit, and there definitely are cases that the benefits out-way the risks (especially when compared to the use of drugs), they are a vastly inferior, incomplete, and sometimes worthless way to get nutrients into the body. The body can not absorb and utilize a synthetic or isolated nutrient as is. It must reform (metabolizes) them into organic complexes (as they are in whole foods). Only a small percentage is able to be re-formed (by drawing the synergistic nutrients from the body) into absorbable, usable matter. The remaining unusable portion either, at best, settles out in the tissues as harmful deposits, or taxes the liver and kidneys before it is excreted in the urine. And that's mighty expensive urine, with most of your supplement dollar going straight down the drain!

Furthermore, when the body attempts to reform isolated/synthetic nutrients into absorbable, usable nutrients, it nutritionally depletes the body of these other nutrients (many of which are other vitamins and minerals). This causes widespread deficiencies. At worst, some isolated and/or synthetic nutrients actually cause you to excrete more than you took of them, adding to a nutritional deficiency (while draining the body), rather than correcting one. Many synthetic and/or isolated nutrients actually suppress beneficial (and vitally essential) bodily cleansing methods, and can be quite toxic and imbalanced!

If an isolated or synthetic nutrient is an antioxidant, it may actually weaken the body's immune system. The body's white blood cells use free radicals to destroy foreign bacteria. Isolated or synthetic antioxidants (including preservatives) may weaken the body's ability to do so. They can also interfere with the body's use of oxygen. Antioxidants in whole foods (in addition to being much more effective), do not interfere with the body's ability to use free radicals constructively or it's ability to use oxygen (they enhance both).

Despite modern advances in the health field, the best source of nutrients, by far is food! However, almost no one is totally nourished today. Commercial agriculture and depleted soils have resulted in far less than ideal nutrient levels in most foods. If the soil is deficient (as it almost always is today) then the food is...and therefore you are deficient too! Even toadies organically grown produce (although vastly superior to commercial produce) is still not nearly as nutritious as it was 100 years ago. Furthermore, few people are consuming ideally grown, raw foods from the vegetable kingdom 100% of the time, and all of us are exposed to a tremendous amount of stress due to living in our modern world. To try and replace the missing minerals in our diets today, many people are turning to colloidal minerals from ancient plant sources. This can be a good way to obtain missing minerals and has helped many people. However, a large percentage of these products also have very high concentrations of Sulfur (40%) and Aluminum (19%), which are not healthful in such amounts. Not all of the mineral material in colloidal mineral products is of plant origin. Some or much of it comes from inorganic, elemental mineral deposits. There is much confusion and misinformation in the marketplace regarding colloidal minerals.

Eight years ago, I began investigating and using liquid colloidal minerals. There are definite benefits from these minerals, yet there are drawbacks as well. I am currently convinced that liquid colloidal minerals are the best way to obtain additional minerals (nutritionally or financially), and they are not the only source of these minerals in an absorbable form. I base this statement on a substantial amount of on-going research (something your local MLM colloidal mineral distributor, or health food store employee most likely can't say in truth). HealthForce has access to many colloidal mineral deposits, and we could produce a product and sell them if we chose to, however, there is a much better way.

A brief point about thyroid problems.

The following quote is from: Source: http://www.arthritis.org

Q. Is there a connection between thyroid problems and arthritis?

A. There is a very interesting relationship between arthritis and disorders of the thyroid gland: Thyroid disease can lead to a type of arthritis, and certain forms of arthritis can increase the risk of thyroid disease.

Arthritis can occur with either hypothyroidism (too little thyroid hormone) and hyperthyroidism (too much thyroid hormone). In fact, it is not uncommon for people with thyroid disease to first seek medical attention for musculoskeletal problems.

People with hypothyroidism commonly develop profound fatigue and a fibromyalgia-like syndrome with diffuse muscle aches and tender points. In addition, they may develop arthritis in the hands and knees that resembles rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Musculoskeletal complications are much less common in people with hyperthyroidism, but can include severe osteoporosis, as well as an unusual swelling of the fingers and legs called “thyroid achropachy.” In general, rheumatic complaints resolve as the thyroid disease is treated.

When thyroid disease occurs as a complication of an inflammatory disease, such as RA, lupus, scleroderma or polymyositis, treatment of both the underlying arthritis and the thyroid disease is generally needed.

John Klippel, MD

Rheumatologist.

End - Source: http://www.arthritis.org

Another point about the thyroid:

Source: http://www.endocrineweb.com/hypo1.html

"There are two fairly common causes of hypothyroidism. The first is a result of previous (or currently ongoing) inflammation of the thyroid gland which leaves a large percentage of the cells of the thyroid damaged (or dead) and incapable of producing sufficient hormone. The most common cause of thyroid gland failure is called autoimmune thyroiditis (also called Hashimoto's thyroiditis), a form of thyroid inflammation caused by the patient's own immune system. The second major cause is the broad category of "medical treatments". As noted on a number of our other pages, the treatment of many thyroid conditions warrants surgical removal of a portion or all of the thyroid gland. If the total mass of thyroid producing cells left within the body are not enough to meet the needs of the body, the patient will develop hypothyroidism. Remember, this is often the goal of the surgery as seen in surgery for thyroid cancer. But at other times, the surgery will be to remove a worrisome nodule, leaving half of the thyroid in the neck undisturbed. Sometimes (often), this remaining thyroid lobe and isthmus will produce enough hormone to meet the demands of the body. For other patients, however, it may become apparent years later that the remaining thyroid just can't quite keep up with demand. Similarly, goiters and some other thyroid conditions can be treated with radioactive iodine therapy. The aim of the radioactive iodine therapy (for benign conditions) is to kill a portion of the thyroid to [1] prevent goiters from growing larger, or [2] producing too much hormone (hyperthyroidism). Occasionally, (often?) the result of radioactive iodine treatment will be that too many cells are damaged so the patient often becomes hypothyroid a year or two later. This is O.K. and usually greatly preferred over the original problem. There are several other rare causes of hypothyroidism, one of them being a completely "normal" thyroid gland which is not making enough hormone because of a problem in the pituitary gland. If the pituitary does not produce enough Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) then the thyroid simply does not have the "signal" to make hormone, so it doesn't."

End- Source: http://www.endocrineweb.com/hypo1.html

As we have seen so far, there are few processes within our bodies that the thyroid is not involved in. It should be clear by now that proper thyroid function is paramount to healty existence for we humans.

Functions of the Thyroid

By Växa

The thyroid secretes essential hormones that control metabolism and the growth and function of almost every organ and system in the body. The influence of the thyroid is important, as it affects heart rate, cholesterol levels, body weight, energy level, muscle strength, the condition of the skin, vision, menstrual regularity, mental state and a host of other conditions.

If the gland releases too much hormone, the result is a condition known as hyperthyroidism. If the gland secretes too little hormone a condition known as hypothyroidism is the result. Symptoms can appear quickly or may develop slowly.

Low thyroid conditions are epidemic today, especially among women. Clinical tests often fail to detect hypothyroidism, even in severe cases. Symptoms include cold hands and feet, fatigue, constipation, cramps depression, sluggish metabolism, mood swings, a hoarse voice, forgetfulness, intolerance to cold, weight gain, fluid retention, low basal temperature, slow pulse, dry/brittle/thinning hair, dry skin yellowish coloration on skin, and recurrent respiratory infections.

After years of seeking an effective product for thyroid conditions, Växa is proud to present its Thyroid Formula. This blend delivers homeopathic remedies, selected herbs a variety of nutrients and essential trace minerals that help maintain healthy levels of thyroid hormone. These ingredients work synergistically on thyroid function. Rather than adding hormones to your body from an outside source, Växa's Thyroid Formula stimulates the thyroid gland to produce normal amounts of thyroid hormone again.

Växa's Thyroid Formula gives a boost to the thyroid, which in turn increases metabolism and energy levels. This formula is a rich source of iodine and contains iron, calcium and zinc.

Växa's Thyroid Formula is a combination of the following herbs:

Bayberry (Myrica Cerifera) is a stimulating astringent that raises the vitality of the system. It improves circulation and is also a strengthening hormones balancer.

Kelp is an abundant source of natural vitamins, minerals and amino acids. It is a nutritional source that is used to promote healthy glandular functions by regulating the thyroid. The large amounts of iodine found in kelp are important in the treatment of an under-active thyroid. Consequently, kelp may contribute to weight loss if the weight gain is directly related to thyroid disorders. Through the regulation of thyroid function there is an improvement in all the associated symptoms.

Black Walnut is rich in organic iodine and manganese that nourishes and strengthens thyroid function, helping to improve a sluggish metabolism.

Mullein (Verbascum Densiflorum) is a demulcent, anodyne, anti-inflammatory herb, it contains iron, magnesium, potassium, sulfur and calcium phosphate. Mullein covers and protects tissues and reduces swelling in glands.

Ginseng (Panax Ginseng) Clinical tests have revealed ginseng's ability to support the body's capacity for work. Some studies also suggest that ginseng may also reduce activation of the adrenal cortex, the gland that releases hormones in response to stress, and reduce the negative effects of stress on the thymus gland. It impedes damage to adrenals and thyroid gland.

The homeopathic constituent of the formula include Lycopus virginicus, Ignatia, Spigelia, Iodum, Spongia tosta, Baryta carbonica, Ammonium muriaticum, Fucus, Thyroidinum, Badiaga, Calcarea iodatum, Ferru iodatum, Sulfuricum iodatum, Pituitary gland, Hypothalamus, Arsenicum album are Thyroid remedies, covering many of the direct reflex symptoms of diseased conditions of that organ. They protect and support the thyroid. These safe remedies stimulate and help the manufacturing of the different thyroid hormones.

Calcium, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, neodynium, terbium, thullium are minerals and trace elements necessary for the good functioning of important metabolic reactions in the thyroid.

The herbal and homeopathic blend in the Växa's Thyroid Formula, rich in iodine and other minerals, has a cleansing effect and stimulates thyroid activity. This formula exercises a general regulating influence on the thyroid.

Formula Highlights

Växa's Thyroid Formula gives a boost to the thyroid, which in turn increases metabolism and energy levels. This formula is a rich source of iodine and contains iron, calcium and zinc.

Bayberry: Bayberry is a stimulating astringent that raises the vitality of the system, improves circulation and is also a strengthening hormones balancer.

Kelp: Kelp is an abundant source of natural vitamins, minerals and amino acids. It is a nutritional source that is used to promote healthy glandular functions by regulating the thyroid.

Black Walnut: Black Walnut is rich in organic iodine and manganese that nourishes and strengthens thyroid function, helping to improve a sluggish metabolism.

Mullein: Mullein is a demulcent, anodyne, anti-inflammatory herb, it contains iron, magnesium, potassium, sulfur and calcium phosphate. Mullein covers and protects scraped tissues and reduces swelling in glands.

Ginseng: Ginseng impedes damage to adrenals and thyroid gland.

Excitotoxins, Neurodegeneration and Neurodevelopment

by Russell L. Blaylock, M.D.

There are a growing number of clinicians and basic scientists who are convinced that a group of compounds called excitotoxins play a critical role in the development of several neurological disorders including migraines, seizures, infections, abnormal neural development, certain endocrine disorders, neuropsychiatric disorders, learning disorders in children, AIDS dementia, episodic violence, lyme borreliosis, hepatic encephalopathy, specific types of obesity, and especially the neurodegenerative diseases, such as ALS, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease, and olivopontocerebellar degeneration.1

An enormous amount of both clinical and experimental evidence has accumulated over the past decade supporting this basic premise. 2 Yet, the FDA still refuses to recognize the immediate and long term danger to the public caused by the practice of allowing various excitotoxins to be added to the food supply, such as MSG, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, and aspartame. The amount of these neurotoxins added to our food has increased enormously since their first introduction. For example, since 1948 the amount of MSG added to foods has doubled every decade. By 1972 262,000 metric tons were being added to foods. Over 800 million pounds of aspartame have been consumed in various products since it was first approved. Ironically, these food additives have nothing to do with preserving food or protecting its integrity. They are all used to alter the taste of food. MSG, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, and natural flavoring are used to enhance the taste of food so that it taste better. Aspartame is an artificial sweetener.

These toxins (excitotoxins) are not present in just a few foods, but rather in almost all processed foods. In many cases they are being added in disguised forms, such as natural flavoring, spices, yeast extract, textured protein, soy protein extract, etc. Experimentally, we know that when subtoxic levels of excitotoxins are given to animals in divided doses, they experience full toxicity, i.e. they are synergistic. Also, liquid forms of excitotoxins, as occurs in soups, gravies and diet soft drinks are more toxic than that added to solid foods. This is because they are more rapidly absorbed and reach higher blood levels.

So, what is an excitotoxin? These are substances, usually acidic amino acids, that react with specialized receptors in the brain in such a way as to lead to destruction of certain types of neurons. Glutamate is one of the more commonly known excitotoxins. MSG is the sodium salt of glutamate. This amino acid is a normal neurotransmitter in the brain. In fact, it is the most commonly used neurotransmitter by the brain. Defenders of MSG and aspartame use, usually say: How could a substance that is used normally by the brain cause harm? This is because, glutamate, as a neurotransmitter, exists in the extracellular fluid only in very, very small concentrations - no more than 8 to 12uM. When the concentration of this transmitter rises above this level the neurons begin to fire abnormally. At higher concentrations, the cells undergo a specialized process of delayed cell death known as excitotoxicity, that is, they are excited to death.

How Excitotoxins Were Discovered

In 1957, two opthalmology residents, Lucas and Newhouse, were conducting an experiment on mice to study a particular eye disorder.3 During the course of this experiment they fed newborn mice MSG and discovered that all demonstrated widespread destruction of the inner nerve layer of the retina. Similar destruction was also seen in adult mice but not as severe as the newborns. The results of their experiment was published in the Archives of Opthalmology and soon forgotten. For ten years prior to this report, large amounts of MSG were being added not only to adult foods but also to baby foods in doses equal to those of the experimental animals.

Then in 1969, Dr. John Olney, a neuroscientist and neuropathologist working out of the Department of Psychiatry at Washington University in St. Louis, repeated Lucas and Newhouse's experiment. 4 His lab assistant noticed that the newborn of MSG exposed mice were grossly obese and short in statue. Further examination also demonstrated hypoplastic organs, including pituitary, thyroid, adrenal as well as reproductive dysfunction. Physiologically, they demonstrated multiple endocrine deficiencies, including TSH, growth hormone, LH, FSH, and ACTH. When Dr. Olney examined the animal's brain, he discovered discrete lesions of the arcuate nucleus as well as less severe destruction of other hypothalamic nuclei. Recent studies have shown that glutamate is the most important neurotransmitter in the hypothalamus.5 Since this early observation, monosodium glutamate and other excitatory substances have become the standard tool in studying the function of the hypothalamus. Later studies indicated that the damage by monosodium glutamate was much more widespread, including the hippocampus, circumventricular organs, locus cereulus, amygdala- limbic system, subthalamus, and striatum.6
